ScreenRuler is a measuring tool for macOS. It runs on your Mac and keeps your work on your Mac. This page explains exactly what the app touches, what leaves your device, and what does not.
The short version. ScreenRuler has no accounts and no ads. Your measurements, guides, profiles and screenshots never leave your Mac. What does leave is limited to two things: anonymous usage analytics (which you can switch off in the app), and what is needed to process a purchase, handled by Apple and RevenueCat.
1. Who we are
ScreenRuler is published by devsapp (“we”, “us”). You can reach us at devsloopdev@gmail.com.
2. What stays on your device
The following is written to your Mac’s local application storage and is never transmitted to us:
- Measurements and measurement history
- Guides, grid settings and breakpoint presets
- Saved profiles and colour palettes
- Preferences such as units, overlay colour, DPI and hotkeys
- Screenshots and exports you create, saved wherever you choose
Deleting the app removes this data. We have no copy of it and no way to retrieve it.
3. System permissions the app asks for
| Permission | Why it is needed | What happens to the data |
|---|---|---|
| Screen Recording | To read the colour of a pixel under the cursor, magnify a region, and detect the edges of on-screen elements. | Screen contents are read into memory, used immediately, and discarded. Nothing is recorded, stored or transmitted. |
| Accessibility | Optional. Used to read the position and size of on-screen interface elements so measurements can snap to them. | Element positions are used on the spot and discarded. No content of other applications is collected. |
macOS asks for these permissions itself, and you can withdraw either at any time in System Settings › Privacy & Security. The related features stop working; the rest of the app carries on.
4. Purchases
If you buy a subscription or a lifetime licence, the payment is processed by Apple through the App Store. We never see or receive your payment card, billing address or Apple Account credentials.
We use RevenueCat, Inc. to check whether a purchase is valid and still active. To do that, the app sends RevenueCat:
- a randomly generated anonymous identifier for the installation (it is not linked to your name, email or Apple Account)
- the App Store purchase receipt and the product purchased
- basic device and platform information, such as the OS version and the country of your App Store storefront
This is used solely to unlock paid features and to keep the purchase working across reinstalls. See RevenueCat’s privacy policy and Apple’s privacy policy.
5. Usage analytics
We use Google Analytics for Firebase to understand which features are used and where the app is failing people, so we know what to improve. This is switched on by default and you can turn it off at any time in ScreenRuler › Settings › Privacy. Turning it off stops collection immediately and clears the identifiers held for your installation.
What is recorded is limited to how the app is used, for example:
- which tool was activated, and whether a measurement was completed
- the unit in use, and the width and height of a measurement in that unit
- when the paywall was shown, and whether a purchase started, completed, was cancelled or failed
- which windows and panels were opened
Firebase also automatically collects an app-instance identifier, device model, operating system version, and approximate location derived from your IP address at country level. Data is processed by Google; see Firebase’s privacy documentation and Google’s privacy policy.
What analytics never includes. We do not send the contents of your screen, screenshots, colours you pick, file names or paths, the text of anything you measure, or any identifier that names you. Events describe what happened, not what was on screen.
6. What we do not do
- No advertising, and no sale or sharing of personal data with advertisers
- No crash-reporting SDK collecting your source or file paths
- No accounts, sign-in or email collection
- No profiling and no automated decision-making
7. Your rights
Analytics data is tied to a random app-instance identifier rather than to you by name, and turning analytics off in Settings deletes that identifier. Beyond that we hold no personal data about you, so there is normally little for us to export, correct or erase. Purchase records held by RevenueCat and Apple are tied to an anonymous identifier and your Apple Account respectively; you can ask us at devsloopdev@gmail.com and we will pass any request on to them.
Depending on where you live, you may have rights under the GDPR, the UK GDPR or the CCPA to access, correct, delete or restrict processing of your personal data, and to complain to your local data protection authority.
8. Children
ScreenRuler is a developer and design tool and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children.
9. Changes to this policy
If this policy changes we will update the date at the top of this page, and material changes will be noted in the app’s release notes.
